Host Your Own Book Drive

Hosting a book drive is an ideal way to raise awareness in your
community and be a wonderful resource to our project.

8 Steps to Hosting a Book Drive

  1. Identify a local business or high traffic location where books will be secure and dry. Be sure to get the name and contact number of a businessemployee who will serve as your point of contact forthe duration of your book drive.

  2. Gather presentable large plastic containers to place in each partner business or location; download the attached flyer (be sure to add your contact information to the flyer); tastefully attach the flyer to the containers and drop them off at your predetermined locations. These flyers are ideal to post in your community to encourage support.

  3. Decide on an acceptable timeline for your book drive. Typically, book drives last 1 month. March is Literacy Month and a good time to raise awareness about how literacy can improve lives.

  4. Send out the attached Press Release to local papers about the book drive (remember to add your contact information and business location to the Press release)

  5. Stay in weekly contact with your book drive location contacts to make sure both your receptacles are maintained and gauge participation. You may need to visit the location to empty the container to make room for more books!

  6. Pick up books from all book drive locations in a timely manner.

  7. Send a prompt THANK YOU letter (attached) to each business or organization that served as a collection point (remember to sign each letter).

  8. Contact us to pick up your book collection. We’d love to hear your story. Be sure to share with us how you heard about the Davis Moon Project and what inspired you to join our cause. If your book drive included community support,
it is always a good idea to send an update to the local papers detailing your
efforts, thanking the community and reporting on number of books collected!

Other Book Collecting Ideas
1.  Host a child's birthday party that accepts no gifts, just book donations.
2.  Appeal to local girls/boys groups such as the Girl/Boy Scouts to collect books as

a troop project.
3.  If you know of a elementary school or after school program that is closing it's
doors, inquire about a library donation.
4.  Book collection points such as Gymboree, Little Gym and Children's
Book sections of local libraries/book stores are excellent collection sites.
5.  Ask your church day care if they might host a month long book drive.
6.  Discuss a classroom book drive with your child's teacher.
